Has anyone landed at either one of these Manitoba crossings lately? We can land at either one as we still have an 8 hour drive afterwards, so just wondering if anyone has a good or bad or stay away story ;)

After a 24 hour drive with a 10 year old and by then a probably cranky husband, a uhaul and a car to import as well as knives to declare I just want to pick the right one. I know it depends on the officer and they are very hit and miss.

Also has anyone had a hard time bringing their mattress? I cant find anyone in Texas to fumigate it and was reading about the Settlers Effects and it isn't required.

They didn't look in our Uhaul or the van we had, admittedly a different crossing than yours. I had two sets of mattresses with me, listed generically under the title of Furniture (X items) on my form.

A word to the wise with the Uhaul: For the love of everything unholy, make sure you're getting one that has cruise control if you're getting one of the larger trucks. This is NOT a standard feature. We had to jump from a 20' to a 26' to get one, and we were lucky that we decided to pick up the truck a day early in case we ran into any issues with the truck we were going to be given. We ended up having to drive out of my city to another location to get a good one the day before we moved, but it was worth it in the end. For a shorter drive, not having the cruise control probably isn't an issue but for a very long drive, you're going to want it.

I have looked into this in detail and have printed out the appropriate documents from the CBSA website. You are correct that mattress fumigation is NOT required as there is an exception for 'settlers effects'. However, it would seem that some CBSA / Customs officials are more aware of this than others and if you get the wrong guy, you may well have to stand your ground and escalate and / or produce the appropriate documents for them to read!

This wiki page explains it well and has links to the appropriate 'official' documents.
