EI on closed work permit (no BOWP)

Hello, I've got a question for the qulification of EI regular benefits.

I currently possess closed work permit and have been working for the company for 2+ years as a FT employee.

But due to some private reasons, I foresee I may get laid off in the near future. That's why I am searching EI related information.

According to the Canada government, I may not be qualified to apply for EI because I don't meet this condition "are ready, willing and capable of working each day" as I am holding closed WP and only can work for my current employer.

I also searched the Internet and asked Chatgpt, realizing there might be a chance to get regular EI even the person is holding closed WP. And I'd like to know if anyone is getting EI with closed WP or was rejected due to the above reason.

If you have the same experience, please share a bit of your story/situation. Thank you

Wow that's a very straightforward answer. Could you explain why or is it based on your experience ?

I just need to double confirm because I called EI phone number and they couldn't even give me an answer because I am holding closed WP.

Based on real life experiences. People qualify for EI on closed permits.

They shouldn’t so not sure why you think this is guaranteed.

Yes I called EI phone number and the agent (or the customer support?) looked up the document said I am probably not eligible.

But he also said mine is a special case and need to see my application to review details.

I also posted in reddit, and looks like people who did apply for EI with closed WP all succeeded.

Many people say I don't qualify but I haven't seen anyone apply and fail.

Apply and see what happens. Technically you are unable to actively be looking for another job and are not able to start working if you secure a job because you would need a new WP.
