I'll be arriving with my wife and one and a half years daughter. My biggest worry is to arrange the temporary accommodation in advance so that we don't have to wander on arrival. Any options other than hotel and motel?
Start looking at kijiji.com in advance and set appointments through e mail have a look on google maps to search the surrounding of a particular area that you will be visiting .. All this effort will help you find your accommodation early after you arrive

.. Like Edmonton journal news page on Facebook just to get some idea about areas where crime rate is high and to get other local city news ..

to avail these loans and grant one has to stay for one year then one can apply for this???what do you say

Well in order to qualify for Alberta loans & grants you "must be a resident of Alberta" and to qualify as "a resident of Alberta " you MUST fulfill any of the below conditions:

Eligibility for Loans
and Grants
You must:
• be a resident of Alberta (see Application
Specifics, Page 12)
• have financial need
• maintain passing grades in at least 60%
of a full course load
• be enrolled as a full-time student taking
a minimum 60% of a full course load
(40% of a full course load if you are a
student with a permanent disability) at
a post-secondary institution approved
by Alberta for students to receive
government student aid

If you are an independent student (see page 6),
you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:

• Alberta is the last province you have lived
in for 12 consecutive months while not a
full-time post-secondary student,

or

• You are attending school in Alberta and
have never lived in any Canadian province
for 12 months in a row. In this case, submit
a Missing Information Résumé (studentaid.
alberta.ca) and/or a letter to explain your
residency situation.

For information on how to submit your
documents, see page 17.

If you are a dependent student (see page 6),
you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:
• Your parent(s) live in Alberta

Source :http://www.studentaid.alberta.ca/media/25565/quick_tips.pdf

So,as mentioned above ,in order to qualify for provincial loans and grants in AB, the new immigrants MUST have lived in AB for 12 consecutive months before applying for them.

Hope that helps!

II) Alberta Health registration will be done here take again all documents. E.g. passport original and copies, landing papers etc.
III) Driving licence will be made in registry offices.
Search for an Appartment:
Although all areas are good, all facilities are available. E.g health, schools, transport, markers etc.
Just go to KJIJI you will get information with ph. no and rent range call them and know more about any thing you want.
Get the homes rent and sell magazines, many are available in all stores and bus stops for free of cost.
Or any friend will help you find a place.
Normally rent ranges from 900 to 1300 CD$ a month with 500 to 800 CD$ security deposit (refundable). With heating and water. Electricity and tv cable and phone comes separately. With an option of 1 year, 6 months or month to month agreement. If you left the home before the agreed date you will have to pay 100 to 150 CD$ per month for remaining period of agreement period.
As my rent and other is as below for an example: All in CD$

Rent : 1175 (water and heating is included) 2 bed room, 1 bath room, terrace, drawing and dining.
TV, CABLE, PHONE: 60 (Telus)
Electricity 60 (EPCOR)
Try to rent an apartment nearing schools, markets etc. so keep searching for at least 8 t0 10 apartments or more.
Keep in mind don't buy of make decision in hustle go to many shops or options make comparison before buying it. Everyone will be happy to give information merits and demerits.

Bus monthly pass for two person : 89 each : 178
Mobile monthly cost for 2 : 50 (MOBILICITY) it must have internet to use GPS to reach anywhere with its help, it is amazing if you use it.

Job Search:
Must visit Alberta Works for job, training, or further education. Resume making, interview TIPS, job search technique etc.
Don't sit at home keep travelling go every where and learn. Make CV as per Alberta works specification and go every job fairs, Shopping malls, recruiting agencies and training institutes you will.....Learn language, culture, area, people, jobs and its requirement and above all contacts.
Try to make net work with your native country people, professional network, religious network, you will know and be referred to jobs these ways.
Try to get any volunteer or training positing any where, this will bring you closer to your desired job. For better and best jobs get local education with jobs, don't panic to get admission first see local demand, requirement and future need then go for admission after 6 months or 1 -2 years.

Best of Luck to All
Excellent post! I heard about the community centres that new immigrants or people with less income can use free of cost or at discounted rates. Would you have any idea about that?
