Guys, i need help. I cant figure out how everything can change in a week. I need help understanding if this is the normal process. I was expecting the process to complete not earlier then May/Jun of 2015. Has anyone else been through this?

We received ____ application for permanent residence on April 3, 2014.

We started processing ____ application on December 30, 2014.

Medical results have been received.

A decision has been made on ____ application. The office will contact _____ concerning this decision.

This is normal and it is good. You should receive an email or letter telling you whether or not they have decided to issue a visa. Odds are that it is a positive result because it was processed quickly.

Depending on where the sponsored person is living and what passport they carry, you may need to submit a passport to have a PR visa put in it.

You are almost done with the wait for a visa!

Mine went ' in process' Dec. 29 and it's DM today and I'm terrified that they said no. Mine follows the timeline of Ottawa as per our spreadsheet. It took a while to go 'in process' because I needed to send in my CSQ, which it was hard to get the color copy of the passport so that delayed things some. I'm terrified to get my hopes up after the long saga this has been.

Of course it a positive decision. There is a VERY limited list of reasons under the law in which CIC can refuse an app (welfare, criminal record etc.); you guys don't have any of those issues. Most refusals fall under the very generic "relationship not genuine" grounds; that certainly won't be applied to an American/Canadian couple that has been together for years.

Stop worrying and start celebrating.

Canuck in the UK you mentioned there were several reasons a PR visa could be refused "welfare, criminal record, etc." Can you elaborate?

What Canuck mentioned was welfare and a criminal record. If the sponsor is on welfare the PR app would fall at the first hurdle as the person sponsoring their partner cannot be on welfare as they have to enter into an agreement to financially support their spouse for three years. Although there are some exceptions.

On the other hand if the person being sponsored has a criminal record they may be inadmissible to Canada depending on the nature of the crime committed and the time passed since the offence.

If there is something in particular that you are worried about its better to post it on the forum as senior members can give you good advice.

This list isn't exhaustive but it's a good start:

Sponsor on welfare, bankrupt or in default of support payments.
Sponsor defaulted on previous sponsorship.
VO believes sponsor and applicant couldn't support themselves without welfare.
Sponsor was themselves sponsored as a spouse and hasn't waited the necessary 5 years.
Sponsor has certain family assault criminal convictions.
Applicant has serious criminal record.
VO believes the relationship isn't genuine.
