Dropping two last letter in surname

Hello, everyone

Hope you guys are doing well. Best wishes to those who are applying for the citizenship and congratulations to those who got it already.

I am about to submit an application for me and my family and was wondering if anyone had a situation similar to mine or, if not, any ideas.

I really want to drop two letters, namely "ov" from my last name and last name of my child.

For example in my current passport and in my PR card it says:

first name: XXXXXXX, last name: TATARANOV

(no middle name).

My name with this "ov" is on all the documents I have been using so far. If I succeed with dropping these two letters I will gladly change it in all docs.

I want to get rid of "ov" in my last name and become just "TATARAN".

Will it become a headache if I try to request it during my citizenship application? I mean I could put my shortened last name in the section [Request for a different name to appear on certificate and please indicate/select reason below].

The reason would be "minor spelling change"?

Is this change is small enough not to cause a delay?

I am also trying to find someone I could talk about it in CIC.

Any tips would be highly appreciate.

Hello, everyone..........Any tips would be highly appreciate.
Citizenship application says "Name (exactly as it is shown on my immigrant document)"

Dropping last two letters might cause delay, if not worse. My suggestions:
  • Get citizenship and the change the name
  • Change the name first and then apply for citizenship

Thank you very much. I will do that. Get the citizenship first and worry later.

So should I leave the second section (Request for a different name..) blank?

The second section is to provide your current name. In your case, Tataranov is your name in the immigration documents(Passport, CoPR, and PRC)
and also you current name...

Citizenship application form is not a place to effect a name change...

You should write your name exactly as it is on your immigration documents (PRC and CoPR). Once you send it, they will send you the AOR with your correct name (they did with me). My middle name was truncated due to space issues and I wrote it EXACTLY as it was written on all my documents. Once they started processing my file, they now send me notifications with my full, correct name.
Good luck!

Two options:

1. Do a change of name and then apply with the new name, OR
2. Apply first with your current name and after your citizenship is granted, do your change and update it on all your documents.

Change of name is done with the provincial government. Contact the relevant provicial registry for necessary info.
