Hi guys,
I came to Ontario, Canada as an international student to pursue an advanced diploma in Marine Navigation at Georgian college's Great Lakes Intl. Marine Training Center. Because the diploma REQUIRES co-op work and because Canada does not allow non-PR's and non-citizens to work on Canadian ships, I had to find work abroad. As an international student, I would also not receive the Canadian licence. I had signed a document stating that ultimately it is my responsibility to fulfill co-op credits and the plan was to get a Canadian licence as I would probably have PR status by then (mum applied for hers in 2008) or would have to wait a year, so we thought.
All my grades were great, my co-op work term was fantastic as well, but due to the nature of working on ships, I missed most of an entire semester (sem 3 in 2012), but was able to continue on to semester 4 (jan 2013) as there were no pre-requisites for most courses and I was in good standing. Then, on co-op term 2 (may 2013) , I left for sailing abroad again, and was unable to make it back in time. This frustrated me, as a lot felt out of my control, and then there was the immigration issues as the PR didn't work out. I had to get my licence and earn as soon as I could, so I left the ship to continue studies in New Zealand. Now, I will be graduating with a licence around August/September this year. We had a lot pinned on Canada & it's been quite a rollercoaster ride...definitely naive, looking back at it!
Reading the new rules, I think I've "dropped" the course as I left in May 2013. Plus, the college isn't responding to my e-mails for a while on my status, so I will be making calls now.
Any idea on how this will affect my student visa exp Nov 2014??? I actually intend to work for a while now, but could finishing up my studies there be an option? What about pursuing further studies in Canada? YOUR input is appreciated v much guys!!!
