I've been a PR for over 9 years now, living in Canada the whole time. I hold a Swedish passport. My current PR card is expired and I have applied for a new card back in May but have yet to receive a new card.

I want to attend a funeral in the US a week from now and would be driving across the border and coming back a few days later. I'd like to know if there's any risk I won't be allowed back into Canada. My understanding is the PR card is not required to return to Canada if you're driving but that is if you have your landed immigrant/permanent resident documents, which for the life of me, I can't find.

I recently flew to Europe and back with an expired PR card, taking my chances that I would be able to come back which I realize was somewhat stupid but I was indeed let back in. I showed them my receipt for the renewal application as well as my expired card. The border services officer said to not leave Canada again until I get my PR card. I asked if there was no way I can return as a visitor or something but he didn't really want to answer the question and said to call the CIC for further information. I have called the CIC and the said I need a PR card to enter Canada again. When asked what would happen if I try to reenter Canada without my PR card, they said they can't tell me what would happen.

This experience leads me to believe that I should be okay to return to Canada but the border services or the CIC can't officially tell me that it will be okay.

Any thoughts on what will happen when I try to come back to Canada? I plan to bring as much documentation with me as I can to prove that I live and work in Canada etc.

Thanks in advance!

Show your expired PR card and your renewal receipt and you will have no issues.

It's perfectly fine.

Once at the Canadian border, they are able to determine your PR status just from your passport if that's all you have (though you may need to go to secondary inspection).
