Driving license abstract - need help

Dear All , i have a question regarding driving license , i have an expired driving license from USA (expired 2 months ago) , yet i am not going to land till May , when should i get a driving abstract from USA ? how recent should the abstract be before applying for a driving license in CANADA (BC) ?

renew your drivers license before you land this will save you doing the writing test

Renew the DL. If you have had DL's from other states, you will probably have to request it via mail unless you can go there. Mail process takes a month. If it is just one state and you have access to DMV, find out if they issue abstract on the same day. Then you can do it like a week before travel.

But one advice, have a valid unexpired DL. Will save you time in getting your canadian DL.

Hi I am in a similar situation but have a valid divers license from US which is not yet expired. Do I have to still request an extract of driving record from the DMV? How easy is it to get the license

Yes. Preferably from all the State DMVs where you had licences.
You can request by mail or in person. Check the respective DMV site.

Thank you Manianz47 some of the information they are asking are way too old for me to remember like my old license number as in those days they used to just give back the picture part of the license and used to destroy the old license. I am going to just try the last state I lived in and will hope to get the license done. Will keep you guys posted in April.

Did you need all the places you've lived? I am 45 - lived in 3 states, can't even imagine trying to get abstracts for 27 years of driving!

It all depends on which provinces & states are applicable. I too lived in many states before arriving in BC (at age 51), and I brought no abstracts at all. I simply drove to the nearest ICBC office, handed them my valid Washington state DL and $75, and drove away 15 minutes later with a shiny new BC license. Most (if not all) provincial licensing authorities are able to electronically access driving records/histories from most U.S. states, particularly the border states.

Ontario does not. They pretty much demand driving abstracts. Even if you're from NY (My pastor's wife is from NY and had to get an abstract) It just needs to have a date that goes back at LEAST three years and you will get a G.
