Does the sponsor need a police clearance certificate?

Hi,

I am trying to sponsor my wife who lives overseas. I am a Canadian Citizen. During the last 5 years, I spent 2 years living and working in the U.S. Do I need to get a police clearance certificate? If yes, should I do it from the beginning or wait until the immigration authorities ask for it?
