I am sponsored by my wife , and I have already been a permanent resident for 2 years. Unfortunely,I was employed for the last 2 year and has recently been laid off. I know I are not allowed to be on social assistance for three years after landing, but I don't know what the social assistance includes. Could I apply EI now?

- Employment Insurance (EI) is the one that provides temporary income support for unemployed Canadians who worked previously and cannot work for reasons of sickness, childbirth, or parenting; or who are providing care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with a significant risk of death.

- Social Assistance or income assistance is a serious, last-resort safety net that provides funding for the basic necessities of life to those who cannot earn an income. While most people should see this program as a temporary bridge, for some others it may be a long-term necessity.
