Does filing taxes as non-resident endanger Permanent Resident status?

Say that someone is a Permanent Resident and has been in Canada for two years. They plan to move to another country for an indefinite period but not more than three years - they want to keep their PR status. Their family is going with them, and they're not leaving behind any significant residential ties. The tax treaty between Canada and the country they're going to makes it clear that they will be considered a resident of this other country.

Everything about this situation screams that they will be a non-resident for tax purposes and that in the year they leave, they should be subject to Canadian taxes on their world income *only* for the part of the year they were factually resident in Canada. However, if they file their Canadian tax return this way, will they risk endangering their PR status?

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Many thanks! So confusing when two different Canadian government agencies use the word "resident" in different and mutually inconsistent ways.
