Do I need to apply a new VISA after I change my status from student to worker?

Actually not me, it's my boyfriend's question.
He got work permit last August after graduation, but his VISA is still not expired until September 2018.
Now He's leaving Canada due to a family emergency this summer, does he need to apply a new VISA? Would this be a problem if he's holding a work permit but VISA shows "student"?

So the visa that is in the passport is a multiple entry visa?

At the time he got it he was a student thats why it says "student". Then he should have another Citizenship and Immigration paper that show his postgrad work permit. I dont see a problem as long as he has the valid mutiple entry visa in the passport and the other official postgrad work permit from CIC
