Hi all,

please help me solve this problem, I really don't know what to do. ><

I need to translate my partner's divorce certificate (he's the sponsor) from Venezuela but there are so many pages of it that the translator told me it'l cost over 400$!!!! to translate all of them! O.O And he's charging 0.21$ per word, which is cheap in Montreal.

Does any of you know which pages are necessary for the translation in case of the Venezuelan divorce papers??
Immigraton doesn't specify, advisors don't know... eh~~

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the divorce judgement and not the divorce certificate. The judgement would be a lengthy document setting out all the parties, all the relevant legislation taken into account and the judge's analysis and decision.

There has to be somewhere in that document that states: the names, nationalities/citizenship of the persons involved in the divorce action, the date the action was brought, the date it becomes effective, the issuing/signing government authority certifying the divorce action, and the name of the registrar. Those are the salient details needed to be translated.

CharlieD10 - thank you for the info.

It's been a week I tried to get to know what to translate, from the govermental advisor who wasn't sure either. There is one page among the others that states the things you mentioned, and the rest are the stuff like decision and 3 times notifications that the previous pages are true.

Jeeeez...typical Venezuelan bureaucracy.

And I really don't want to pay more money for 5min explanation from a lawyer who also will be guessing. Eh, maybe I should but after all the spending I had to make so far, hmm.

SEVEN07 - thank you for the info as well, hopefully I won't need to use it. ;)

Just a small update:

I translated only one page, with what looked like a summary of the previous pages (the ones with decision, reasons etc) and paid 45 CAD.

But as I was calling the immigration about something else, I asked about this as well - they didn't know much. A really nice lady asked me first if this document is called a 'divorce certificate'. When I described her what in contains and how much it will cost to translate everything , she asked me to wait so that she can get a second opinion. And then she told me that to determine which pages qualify as a 'divorce certificate' I need to contact the body that created this document. In other words, we'd have to call the court/notary in Venezuela to ask about their interpretation...

Hmmm.....I'm really torn if we should even try. :-\

Anybody here from Venezuela with a divorce papers that had to be translated??? :p

Why not try sending in this one-page document as the divorce certificate. If the visa officer accepts it, great. If not, they will probably ask for more, not just reject the application outright, in which case you can spend the money and get it translated then.
