My brother recently went to canada. He got study permit and work permit. He visited service canada office to get SIN number. But the office said that it cannot be issued because the surname column in your passport is blank. However, on study permit the name 'Gursharan Singh' is mentioned against surname/last name and given name is left blank because in canada last name/surname is must. So where is the problem? In the passport or study permit? and whay there is a difficulty in getting SIN number. Please reply. Its urgent

1. Have him go back to Service Canada and show them this "http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=014&top=4

What do you mean by surname?
Your surname is your family name. It is also called your “last name.” When filling out applications, type your surname as it appears on your passport, travel or identity document.

Do not use initials.

If you do not have a family name on your passport, travel or identity document, enter all your given name(s) in the surname field and leave the given name field blank. Do not enter “Not applicable,” “*” or “NA.”
