Hi guys.
I got my PR in October 2015 and moved to Toronto in December 2015. Worked in 2016 at a 'surviving job' for 3 months and got another job where I also worked for another 3 months.
I moved back to Europe with my Canadian wife (my sponsor) since I received a business offer back home. Came to Poland in October 2016.

I just realized, that I never did my taxes in Canada for 2016, when I worked there for about 6 months in total :(
I can't do my taxes online since I am late but I am going for Christmas to Canada in 3 weeks.

I have a few questions:
1. How to deal with the tax issue?
2. I also have a business license in Canada, since I opened my business a few weeks before I moved back to Poland. I registered it but never started the operations. Should I close the business asap or is it ok, that it's opened but not operating.
3. I am running a successful business here, in Poland. Should I declare it and let the Canadian tax office that I am making money here?
I want to go back to Canada in 2020 and apply for Canadian citizenship in the future and I am scared that the fact I didn't do my taxes on time can effect my application.
Please help.

Hi

1. File your 2016 return. If you owe taxes, there will be some interest charges but as you only worked a short time and likely didn't make a lot of money, it won't be much. It isn't a big deal. Many people file their taxes late.

2. You can leave it as is.

3. You would only need to declare your Polish income in Canada if you are considered a tax resident in Canada.

After you submitted the tax return make sure you inform the CRA that you have become a non-resident (https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/cra-arc/formspubs/pbg/nr73/nr73-17e.pdf ). Make sure neither you nor your wife keep significant ties to Canada.

For the business you should be fine as long as you did not register for any additional CRA accounts that need to file returns (payroll, gst/hst etc.). I am not sure if keeping a business here would be considered having a significant tie so you would need to research more on this.
