Hello,

I was a candidate for the FT MBA program at UBC for the August intake in 2011. I applied for the TRV in late June 2011, but by the time the CHC in Islamabad, Pakistan, issued me a TRV and a Letter of Introduction in late August, classes at the university had already started, and despite my attempts to start the program as a late entry, I was forced to withdraw from the program. Subsequently, I was granted a deferral to the academic year starting August 2012, and the university sent me an updated Letter of Admission. The validity date on both the TRV (on the passport) and LOI is 29 Aug, 2012. I now intend to leave for Canada in late July, so as to enter Canada before the expiry date. My query related to this situation is whether I can leave for Canada with the TRV and LOI that were issued last year, say a month in advance of their expiry? Or will I have to send my passport back to the CHC for a renewal of TRV and/or LOI by myself? I have mailed CHC Islamabad a few times in the last month or so seeking clarification, but have not received a response to date. Would appreciate if someone could advise me on the best course of action to take. Thanks.

Does your LOI mention entry session on it?

Nope, it does not. It merely mentions the visa validity date (29/8/2012) and a line that reads 'You must enter Canada no later than the visa validity noted above.' No mention of any entry session, or for that matter, anything related to academics and/or the university.

In my opinion you should go to Canada a little earlier and apply for visa / Study permit extension from there........

@momi: So you think I'm good to go with a TRV and LOI that was issued almost 11 months back (given that I'm planning on leaving for Canada late July)? Moreover, will the Immigration Officer at the Port of Entry issue me a Study Permit for the entire duration of my program (16 months) knowing that my TRV would be expiring in about a month? Although I know the two are separate, I read somewhere on this forum that the study permit is often issued for the same duration as the TRV.

Does anyone know of any case similar to mine where a student left for Canada to attend an academic session in a subsequent year after the TRV and LOI had been issued (ie a year earlier)?

There are some cases on this forum where students reached Canada late by one semester but your delay is longer......

You need a new TRV. Beside the validity of TRV, you must use your TRV with in 3 to 4 months of issuance, if you don't it get lapsed and you need a new one. It's written clearly on your TRV that you must use this TRV before a specified date.

@Jd5: The validity date of the TRV and the LOI is August 29, 2012, and it is specifically mentioned on the LOI that I must enter Canada before this date. Nowhere is it mentioned that I must use my TRV within 3 to 4 months. Moreover, I have mailed the CHC in Islamabad a number of times detailing my situation and inquiring about the renewal of the TRV, but have yet to receive any reply from them. Should I then just send over the passport and LOI by myself thru courier (as in without the CHC contacting me to send it over)?

You are good to enter Canada before the expiry of your TRV.

Plan accordingly so that you start you study program in time in Canada.

All the best for your trip and study in Canada.
