Hello all

I heard and read the changes applied to renew a PR and citizenship application requirements.
The question is;
If I land on 1/1/2016
Left and returned back to Canada on lets say 1/1/2019
Stayed two years continuously and applied for PR renewal on 1/1/2021
Is that ok? (The issue is the physical residence/absence calculator on cic website still shows it should be 3 years)

Then if I stay one more year; Am I eligible to apply for citizenship for example on 1/1/2022?

Thanks a lot guys !

Do not confuse the PR residency requirements with Citizenship requirements which recently changed and based on my interpretation of your post seems you are doing by referring to the physical residence calculator which is for citizenship applications hence the 3 years requirement out of the 5 years prior to application.

The PR residency obligation in your case would require you to accumulate 730 days in Canada between 1/1/2016 and 31/12/2020 so the first 5 years after landing.

So for the PR residency obligation your example would be fine but nobody on the forum would recommend leaving it until exactly 3 years away to return to Canada but instead have a 2 or 3 month buffer and come back say 3Q or begin 4Q 2018. After that stay in country without leaving until 1/1/2021, also not applying to renew your PR card until after 1/1/2021.

For the citizenship question sure you could apply for citizenship after 1/1/2022 assuming you spend a minimum of 1095 days physically in Canada during 2019/2020/2021. The important thing is the 1095 days physical presence has to be within the 5 years prior to the date you apply for citizenship.
