NAGZ;
What I understand from your question: How much time does an applicant have to submit his/her passport to the embassy to have the visa attached on it? Am I right?
If so, then when the embassy officers request a passport to attach a visa on it, they tell the applicant that your original passport must be received by our office within 45 days. Usually the applicant receives it back after two weeks.

"Usually the applicant receives it back after two weeks" this time period is true if and only if every thing has been done and received previously.

Nagz, I think this really depends on how much time you have before your visa expires.
For instance, if someone's meds were going to expire within 10 days then they will require you to send your passport in less than 10 days.
I had a friend who sponsored her husband from Abu Dhabi and the embassy there literally required him to submit his passport and leave to Canada within 5 days because his meds were just about to expire.
In your case however, you've done your meds recently, so i think they will give you 30 - 45 days to send your passport.
Again, though that's just my thinking... god only knows what kind of procedure they have in place for things....
:)

I read an interesting article that may explain why the wait times have gone up. I will try to find the link for it but I found it on the CIC website. It was an audit done on the Embassey in Syria. It mentioned that the immigration department was in need if renovations and these renovations would affect processing of applications. I believe the audit was dine in February. I will try to post a link.... but it could be that our files are shoved into a corner while they renovate?????

No way, when the medical (or the passport) expires in 60 days, you'll be required to redo it (or have it extended); unless otherwise you have a special case.

Thx Ali_M3 :) The part I was talking about is 1.1.2. The whole article is iterating though, kind of gives an inside view of what's happening at the embassy. Hoping for some PPR this week:)

Lol i read some of it . particularly enjoyed the part abt internal controls.

"We expected to find that application decisions were adequately documented, that processes and procedures complied with applicable legislation and policies, that sufficient controls were in place to ensure that admissibility requirements were met, and that designated and delegated authorities for decisions were appropriate and complied with departmental policy."

ya so the fact that they acknowledge te receipt of files and documents then pretend like they've not received them is a big problem in their internal control systems ...

moreover....

"The mission did not periodically perform a physical inventory of controlled forms to validate its paper records; and
Electronic tools used to track the use of controlled documents had errors due to incorrect formula referencing, and numbers were not periodically reviewed or verified for accuracy. These were corrected immediately and, consequently, we were able to reconcile to the corrected figures.
