Current international student - how can my son be an international student also?

I’m a current international student on my first year of classes. My son who is with me in Canada now will be graduating from secondary school and moving to college in 2022, while I’m still studying. He’s currently studying also in Canada now in Grade 11.
If he decides to study in a university after he graduates secondary school, does he need to apply to become an international student also? He’s on visitor visa now.
Is the process different in this situation?

He is in grade 11 (secondary) and his parent is on as study permit.
