Hello Everyone,

New here, but have been in Canada for the past 12 years (Student, Post Graduate Work-permit Holder etc) Because of some very unlucky set of events, I was asked to apply though EE for PR and they returned my PR application in Nov 2014. Also My PWP expired in Dec 2014. My employer lied to me and told me they would do a LMIA to later tell me that they hired someone else for my job who was Canadian and left me on the street (This was a public university that did this to me.. just sad) . In 2016 Jan, I got my CR and Protected Person status from IRB. Now they say work permits take 5 months (online Applications) to process. I have been without a job for now a year with all my experience and qualifications. I was offered 4 positions I had to give up on because of this. Does CRs and Protected persons HAVE TO have a work permit to work? I mean honestly asking approved CR to wait for 5 months is ridiculous. I get $600 from ON Works (which is 1/100 of what I made when I was in my career) and that is not even enough to pay rent, let alone bill. What do people do in this situation other than being homeless? I mean as soon as I got the CR status I got OHIP/OSAP all the other benefits Canadians get but I cant work and pay taxes until I get a work permit that take half a year to process. Any advice would be helpful. I already have a SIN. I think this is a HUGE problem. I understand refugee claimants having to obtain a permit but approved refugees ? does anyone know the logic behind this?

You cannot obtain a SIN without a work permit, so if you have a SIN you can work without a work permit just like any other Canadian. Whats the first number of your SIN? If it starts with 9 it means you are just like any other Canadian. If it starts with 2, it means you are a refugee that had previous SIN with an expired work permit?

But since you were accepted as a refugee if my understanding is right, you really dont need a work permit to work. Best of luck.
