Hey everyone. My wife will be landing here in Canada on August 15th :). I do have a question regarding the connecting flights we booked. She's a nervous wreck and, unfortunately, I don't travel enough to have any clue on how things work.

<<<edited out part of going to Warsaw, figured out how bags work there!>>>

Ok, now, after that, she will land in Toronto then connect to Ottawa (I live in Ottawa). When in Toronto, she will go through customs, "land" at immigration. After that, I read she needs to go pick up her bags (not hard, I told her it's right there usually :p) then bring them to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) processing. What is that? o_O Then after that she has to bring them to Connecting Baggage Belt, again, what? I have no idea how this stuff works, and so I have no way to try and help her understand it.

Airport stuff is way too confusing >.>

Also, since I got your attention, anyone have a link on how to fill the B4 form? Would really be helpful :).

Also, since its a connecting flight moscow - warsaw - toronto - ottawa, when she gets her plane ticket in Moscow, since its connecting, will it all have the info needed for all the flights so she doesnt need to get new tickets? I ask because in Warsaw they will only let her pass if she has tickets to go to Canada (since no visa and they want proof). >.>

Can't help you much on Warsaw..Important thing to have your wife do is to make sure her luggage she is checking has all the baggage tags with the destination of Ottawa (CYOW)

As for Toronto its not to difficult to get through. After immigration yes she will have to find her bags on the specified luggage carasel and go through CBSA after that as soon as she clears. right outside cbsa through the transiting (door might not be a door cant remember) but anyway the baggage drop is right there. Usually there is airport workers there to help with loading the luggage on the belt. Arriving in Ottawa (YOW) is really easy. get off the plane and follow the crowd to the escalator and go down it to the luggage carosel. Good luck

In Moscow when she gets her boarding pass printed she can ask them at the ticket check in counter to see if they are able to print "All the boarding passes" usually this can be done.

thanks for both your replies man. What is the "CBSA"? I understand pretty much what she has to do, and understand the drop off for connecting will be past that, I just have no idea what CBSA is. Is that the place where after your bags, before you leave that big room where all the bags are, theres an officer there who looks at your passport or whatever? (I guess she could ask him where to go, lol)

CBSA ...Canada Border Services Agency. Not exactly sure what she has to do with them but she will be asked for COPR passport etc. they will most likely check her bags and ask for her B4 form too..... someone else might be able to help a little more that is more knowledgeable/has done the landing.

When its my turn I'm hoping to be able to avoid all the what ifs and fly over to my wife and stay there in Thailand or Philippines for a week or two and fly back together. That is our plan.

If I'm not mistaken, if she has booked the flight through one carrier or booked all the connecting flights at once, her luggage will automatically be put into the plane that leaves for Ottawa, without her having to claim it in Toronto. I am not sure if she needs to claim her luggage for immigration purposes in Toronto, but if not, the luggage will be put into the ottawa flight without her having to do anything. And if she actually needs to claim it for immigration purposes, she better check with the airline and make sure that they actually put her luggage out, rather than transfer it to the ottawa bound flight.

As Toronto is the first port of entry into Canada she will have to claim her baggage and recheck it.
example arriving in Canada from Asia ... my destination airport is Ottawa ..my Canadian port of entry was Vancouver my luggage was tagged right through but Being Vancouver was my first port of entry it is required to collect the bags and go through CBSA

No need to worry about not getting your bags off the plane as all baggage will be automatically removed at the first port of entry into Canada for inspection.

Its the same with Toronto... My destination airport was Ottawa, arrived from Asia into Toronto and had to collect and recheck baggage after going through CBSA.

Yes, she will have to claim her luggage since she is coming from an international country. She will go through customs in Toronto. Once they see she is landing as PR, they will send her to secondary immigration, where they will process her PR. It will be fast. Once she finishes there, she will go and pick up her luggage. Once she shows her customs card to one of the customs agents, she will go through some barred exits. Now, people who are exiting in Toronto, go through the doors on the right. People who are connecting to another flight go to the left door/ hallway, where she will recheck her luggage and go to the gate to wait for her plane to Ottawa. I'm not sure if she will have to change terminals, but if it's the same airline she flew into Toronto with, she will have an easy time and not have to change terminals. The airport people are super nice and helpful. If she gets turned around they will help her. Hopefully she has at least an hour between flights so she can relax and not worry about making a mistake or missing her connecting flight.

Thank you very much for your help. She will have 3 hours total once she lands in Toronto.

3hrs should be no problem to get her things done and catch the connection.
