My boyfriend is looking to immigrate to Canada from the USA. We have been in a long distance relationship for a year, but only recently met in person. Would we qualify as being in a conjugal relationship even though we only began to be sexually active a week or two ago?

No you won't qualify as conjugal because there's no legal impediment to getting married in USA. Not being able to afford the wedding, can't take time off wedding, doesn't count towards filing conjugal. Being sexually active has nothing to do with being able to immigrate here or applying through sponsorship.

Either live together for a year and file common law, or get married and file via spouse sponsorship. He can also try to immigrate on his own as a skilled worker.

Applying conjugal means that you actually cannot get married for some sort of political or legal reasons. Like....if your boyfriend was from a country where it's illegal to marry a foreigner or something. It's actually really difficult to prove. If he's from the US there's no reason why you couldn't go there and get married, or he could come here and marry you.

If you apply under conjugal you will easily get refused in your case.
