Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help to clarify some queries for me please? My husband's sister married a canadian citizen 10 years ago, and she is now also a canadian citizen (has been for approx 6 years). My husband and I are looking into the best way of applying for immigration to Canada ourselves. We have no children, I am 28 and my husband is 30. We do not qualify for the skilled worker programme as neither of our occupations are on the high demand list.

Can anyone clarify if we would be eligable for my husband's sister to sponsor us for immigration? The literature is very confusing!

I would welcome your advice.

Thanks, Vicky

As an aside - you're from the UK, correct?

If so, you could look into applying for a working holiday visa (IEC). This isn't an immigration visa. However the visa would allow you to come to Canada temporarily and work for a year to gain Canadian work experience (which might help you qualify to immigrate at a later date).

They are in Ontario. Do you think we would be able to go down the family class sponsorship route?

Regarding the working holiday visa - the only problem is finding an employer to offer you a job when you are not in the country! As an occupational therapist, I will have to complete an exam to convert my qualifications and register with the college of Ontario, all of which will delay my ability to work. To apply for the working holiday visa, do I need to have secured a job offer first? Or can i come over to Canada and apply for jobs whilst there?

Any tips how to encourage an employer to help with work visas or to employ an international person?!

Oh and yes I'm in the UK.

Thanks Vicky

If they live in Ontario, then unfortunately the family class sponsorship route is definitely not possible. Sorry!

I definitely see what you're staying about the working holiday visa and the time required to qualify as an OT. I'm not in that field and unfortunately don't have any tips to offer. Hopefully someone else will be able to help and throw in their two cents. And no - you do not need a secured job or job offer to apply for a working holiday visa.

Good luck.

Oh well that's something positive if i can apply for the working holiday visa without a job offer. I just think it will be easier to seure a job once i'm over there!

Do you know if I am able to apply for a job whilst in Canada on a working holiday visa? I thought i read somewhere that you can only apply for jobs whilst outside of Canada??

Thank you very much for your help!!

The working holiday visa is for young people - they go to another country and work/travel for a year or so (depending on the country). So you don't need a job offer beforehand. However, these visas are sort of geared to casual work or temporary jobs, not careers - so many people on a working holiday visa work in restaurants, in shops, etc.
