I have a very specific issue and I’m not sure how to go about fixing it. I was born abroad and immigrated to Canada around the age of 3. My foreign birth certificate and foreign passport has a last name different than my record of landing. For some reason, my record of landing listed my last name as my father’s last name instead of what was on my passport when entering Canada. So for example, my birth certificate/foreign passport has my name as “Mary Smith” and my record of landing lists my name as “Mary John”. I’ve lived my whole life in Canada as “Mary John” but realize now that my record of landing should’ve been corrected to my birth certificate name.
My issue now is that my birth certificate name has no ties to my current name. No proof of legal name change; it was just never recorded properly. Is it worth trying to fix this after all these years? (I’m 30 now). Has anyone ever dealt with anything even remotely similar?
