Good afternoon,

My Canadian company applied for an LMO and it got approved. I now have my closed work permit on hand and I was ready to start working next Monday. Now my company has told me that they are going to close my department so I cannot work there anymore. Is this legal? Can I change my closed work permit for another company in a situation like this? What are my rights? I am calling CIC but they have a large number of calls right now and cannot receive more. Thanks a lot!

Yes - it's certainly legal. Companies sometimes have to close down or sometimes decide they don't need / can't affort a role anymore.

Unfortunately your close work permit is tied to that specific employer - and no exceptions are made. If you want to work for someone else, you will need a new LMO/LMIA and a new work permit.
