Common-law partner sponsorship of international student - open work permit or PGWP?

Hello,
I'm an international student with a valid study permit until November 2022 - my common-law partner (Quebec citizen) is sponsoring me and we will send in the application in the coming week
Should I apply for an open-work permit since my study permit will likely expire before my permanent residency is processed (assuming it is accepted) or just wait and get the post-graduate work permit once I graduate?
