"Effective October 25, 2012, sponsored spouses or partners must now live together in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day they receive permanent residence status in Canada.

If you are a spouse or partner being sponsored to come to Canada, this applies to you if:

You are being sponsored by a permanent resident or Canadian citizen
You have been in a relationship for two years or less with your sponsor
You have no children in common
Your application was received on or after October 25, 2012"

Hi All,

For the above clause of two years staying together , does it apply to everyone who has "one" of the above mentioned points?

Or Is only for applicants who have all the above mentioned points . just curious.

Thanks

As far as I understand that clause it only applies to you if all of the mentioned points apply to you.

It applies to those that find themselves in all the situations that are mentioned there.

The robocons can tinker away at immigration yet they can't even deal with their own VO staff. Absolute. National. Shame.
Turf the mofos in 2015.

The OP beat it by a month anyway. Application filed in September...

I was just curious. I am more than happy with my partner. :)

I tease my husband that I made it in under the wire. App received Oct 23. :P

I still cannot believe they will execute the resources to track down EVERY single relationship that ends in less than two years. At best, it will be a reactionary approach i.e. to complaints ONLY, and if TOO MANY complaints then only the LOUDEST!

lol yeah they will need to hire a whole new department just to check up on all of us. Just another way to try to prevent fraud marriages I guess, right? Your marriage is legit and no one turns abusive or something crazy like that then you can pretty much ignore the new rule cause there would be no chance it would be violated.

My thought was that it's mostly for the Canadian sponsor's protection, since they're responsible for the PR for three years. If the PR gets his/her card in hand and says, "Later, loser! I'm going to make my own life in Canada without you," the spouse can now at least make CIC aware and hope that action is taken. It's not perfect (abuse by the spouse, etc), but it makes some sense to me.
