I applied for both canadian passport and citizenship certificated for my baby -that was born abroad -at the same time. We received her canadian passport in 2 weeks, but we were told the certificate takes between 6-8 months. I called the embassy today and they informed me, the office that process the certificates are really way behind the date and this may take up to a year.
My baby will be in Canada soon, she is only 6 months old and still need some immunizations, doctor check ups, etc. I wanted to get her a social insurance number for this, but in ordet to apply for a SIN u need to submit the original citizenship certificate.
Does it mean she wont be able to get social insurance wil they start doing their work on time? will she need to wait about 7 months without it? Can I just show her passport as a proof she is canadian and instead the citizenship certificate??

Social insurance number's have nothing to do with immunizations, doctor visits etc. She needs a health insurance card from whichever province you are settling in. SIN is used for employment and tax purposes etc. If you are applying for health insurance you do require certain documents refer to the proper website. example for Ontario

You need a health care card, not a SIN. AB health will cover you from day 1 but in case you can't get the card right away, if you need health care and have to pay, keep receipts and send them in to get re-imbursed. http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/contact-AHCIP.html will show you where to apply. For your daughter, take her passport with you, for yourself, your passport and PR landing documents and something verifying your address. Could be a statement from a bank saying you opened an account and gave that address or for a cell phone whatever. Something official showing your name and your address. That's your proof you are living in AB.

Since you are in the US, talk to the Canadian embassy about how to apply. If you apply for a citizenship certificate for your baby, you can apply for a temporary passport at the same time.

Thanks a million for the reply. You have given me some hope. Where do I apply for the emergency passport, Can I apply in Canada. Do you know where I can get the forms for it? I just came back from India after visiting with my daughter; it would be difficult to go back to India to apply

If you are in Canada, contact CIC at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/contacts/index.asp#inside and ask.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Can I apply in the US, since I am currently living here? What types of documents would I need to apply for the passport? Do I have to go to the embassy? If I go to Canada, where do I go to apply?

To apply for a passport, go to http://www.passport.gc.ca/index.aspx?lang=eng

There are step-by-step instructions for applying for passports from Canada, the U.S.A. and other countries.

If you are not in Canada, talk to the Canadian embassy in the US about what you have to do. It's a bit tricky because you are not in the same country as your baby but somebody should be able to tell you.

You can start by reading this section about applying for a citizenship certificate for your baby: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp

It says at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp#step5 that if you don't live in Canada yourself, you should apply at the embassy where you live. However, since your baby does not live with you, you might have to apply through the embassy where your baby lives. I'd say start by asking the embassy in the US. You can find one here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/washington/offices-bureaux/index.aspx

Is this true for citizens? I was able to get a SIN card while I was a student in Canada on a student visa (for my on-campus employment).
