Hi,

We are permanent residents in Ontario and are expecting a baby in June. We might have urgent travel plans quite soon after the birth. How long will it take to get a passport for the newborn child? From what I understand we need the proof of citizenship certificate and the processing time is 6-8 weeks. And an addition 20 days for the passport. Is there a way to get it quicker?

You just need to register and wait for birth certificate 4-12 weeks and apply for passport.

You don't need citizenship certificate just the birth certificate of the baby. You need to apply online, mine it takes a month to arrived the birth certificate then i apply for passport it arrived after 3 weeks. I think you can ask them for urgent processing coz they ask me if i have travel plans.

Make sure you apply/obtain the Long-form Birth Certificate for the baby. In Ontario its also known as the "certified copy of birth registration" thats what you use to apply baby's passport. Use the newborn registration bundle (online application on ServiceOntario) if you're in ontario.
You would also need to get a baby's passport photograph done before applying passport.

(Apply in person at passport office for faster turnaround of the infant/child passport.)
