Hi All,

A bit about my background - I landed as a Permanent Resident ("short landing") in March 2016. Upon completion of the landing, I returned back to the USA where I lived until finally moving to Canada in October 2018 (I did visit Canada a few times prior to the 'final' move, but didn't establish residence in Canada until October 2018). I had no income in Canada, and no ties until I established residence in 2018. My questions follow-

(i) The citizenship application asks me if I filed taxes for 2016 through 2021 (I have filed taxes for 2018, 2019 and 2020). Per my understanding, I am not required to file taxes for 2016 and 2017 (since I had no income in Canada, and no ties to Canada)- can someone validate my understanding?

(ii) The citizenship application requirement states -"may need to file personal income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period".
Considering that I moved in October 2018, would my tax filing for 2018 be acceptable towards the requirement, or is it advisable that I file taxes for 2021 and then submit the citizenship application (in which case I will have tax fillings for three complete fiscal years - 2019, 2020, 2021)?

(iii) Has anyone been asked to submit a tax assessment after submitting their application? Alternatively, would it be better to provide the assessments upfront with the application?

Many thanks!
NK
