hey guys, im sponsoring my wife from costa rica, just have a quick question: I have translated a whole bunch of chat logs between me and my wife... I wanted to know if the original chat logs (that are not translated) have to be included along with the translated logs?

thanks,

Hi, garytheoiler.

Yes, you have to include copies of the translated logs. Your translations have to be signed with a declaration that the statements in the spanish language of the original are the same as the ones in the translation in english language.

Hi!

Just attach an additional sheet with the declaration, the date and signed by whoever did the translations. It basically has to say that you swear that the statements in the spanish language in the original document are the same as the statements in the english language in the translation.

bonbon9, I could be wrong but I have heard several times (in in this forum) if there not legal documents (chat logs, personal emails, etc) you can translate them yourself, but any legal document (Mariage Certificate, Police Clearance, etc) have to be traslated and notoried.

Hi Tallen!

Yes, that's totally right. Chat logs can be translated by yourself but you'd still need to add a small declaration, your signature and date. I found an example here:

http://www.dyerlabs.com/finding_a_translator/form.html

For my translations, I included a footnote on the translated pages which said something more simple, like:

I, XXXXX, declare that I understand the German language and the English language; and that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, the statements in the XXXX language in the attached translation of _____________, have the same meanings as the statements in the XXXX language in the original document, a copy of which I have attached.

(Signature + date)

This is not an answer but rather a question...

I am applying to a Arabic/French speaking country...does this mean I have to translate my english chat logs? I was not aware of this...can someone please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

No, everything has to be in French or English, so your English chat logs are fine. Just like French chat logs would be fine going to a visa office in an English-speaking country. Visa officers have to be bilingual.

Hi,

If I am translating several documents (e.g. Skype chat logs, Messenger chat logs, Emails, cards, etc.) do I have to attached a separate translator's declaration to each document?

One of my chat logs is from a site that doesn't maintain a chat history, but luckily I have a record of it as I cut and pasted it into Word at the time. I added the translation on the same page as the original text, but in a different color font. I did this to save paper as my application package is already killing hundreds of trees. Do you think this is OK or do I have to put the translation on a separate piece of paper for it to be valid?

What you did will be fine. If you submit all the logs together, as one piece of evidence, then just include one declaration.
