Chat Log Minimizer

Purpose of this post: I created a small tool to minimize chat logs and thought to share this tool to benefit people on this forum.

Description: ChatMinimizer will take a large chat log file (e.g. WhatsApp, Viber, etc.) and produce a minimized file by keeping a few chat messages from every day. The minimized file will be in the same format as the original file but instead of having all chat messages it will have few messages from every day. This way you can send a chat log with your spousal application to show regular communication without sending too much.

No installation required.

Instructions

• Send the chat logs from WhatsApp or Viber to your PC (via email).
  • Instructions for WhatsApp: https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/android/30031898
  • Instructions for Viber: https://support.viber.com/customer/portal/articles/1334452-create-a-backup-file-of-your-messages#.VseHo_krKUk
• Download the ChatMinimizer program
• Open ChatMinimizer.exe and browse to your chat log file that you saved in step 1
• Select how much messages to keep then save the minimized file

Disclaimer: this is a personal effort project. The tool is not guaranteed to work in all cases. I am able to add features depending on effort required. Most importantly I don't know how much chat messages you should include in your application. It is up to you to determine this. Use at your own risk.

Note: the tool is in alpha phase if you find any bugs please let me know about them in a private message.

Very cool! Is there any way to do this with skype or facebook messages?

For Facebook, not yet. Something to look into.

For Skype for Windows there is an easy way:

• In Skype, click the mouse in the conversation where the messages are
• Scroll up to the oldest message you would like to see (use page up button or scroll manually)
• Right click in the conversation window then click "Select All". Right click again then click "Copy Selection"
• Open notepad and paste the messages then save the file

Now you can open the Skype chat file in ChatMinimizer and create a minimized file.

Unfortunately this will only work on Windows. Not sure if there is a similar program for Mac.
