Changing status from Student to Worker

Hello Friends,

I am British national holding British passport. I am studying here in Canada as international Student in Post Graduate 2 year program. I am about to complete my 1st Semester and was curious to know if i am eligible to apply for work permit if i can find an employer. I have good experience in HR and recruitment field and was thinking if i will be eligible to apply?

Hey, as a student, once you've finished your course you should be able to apply for a Postgraduate Work Permit, assuming the program you've taken has met the standards required by CIC: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad.asp

As you've done a two year course, I believe that entitles you to a 3 year open work permit.

Another good option as a British national is the International Experience Canada work permit: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/index.asp?country=hk

For both these programs it's not required that you have a job offer lined up in advance. There may well be other options too, but these are the ones I'm most familiar with.

If you're asking about working *while* you are studying, it was my understanding that most study permits now come with an authorization for off campus work of up to 20 hours a week - double check the wording on your study permit to clarify further.

1. Your prospective employer would have to obtain an approved LMIA, after advertising the position for 4 weeks, paying $1000 and proving that no Canadian/PRs were qualified for the position and the salary was above the median amount for the position, then you could apply for a work permit.
2. You are not eligible for a Post Grad work permit, until you complete your course. Although if you are attending a Designated School, you could work 20 hours per week during school, and full time during breaks.
