Hello,

I have asked this question before in the “settlement issues” section without much luck.

I actually have a few questions.

How does my wife change her name in Canada? Her passport still has her maiden name on it.

If we change her lastname on her Canadian identifications, do we need to update her last name on her American passport to reflect her lastname on her Canadian identifications?

Thank you!

Jeff

If you are in Quebec, you can't. Anywhere else, you can, but there is no requirement to do so. Why don't you just leave it as it is?

Very simple. If she has the maiden name or just a middle name (which passport guys LOVE to write only middle name as LAST name) as soon as you guys go to apply SIN or other docs they will automatically include your LAST NAME on her docs . I saw it happened to friends. Unless she wants to keep her maiden name as it is.

That did not happen for us. Her Canadian identification has her maiden name on it still.

I just want to know, if her passport has her maiden name on it and her Canadian ID has my lastname on it, will this create issues coming and going from Canada?

She can travel on her passport as it is as they oNLY see passport when entering or leaving a country. And in the long run after she is a citizen here she can apply with your last name without problems.

Canada most certainly does not automatically change a women's name to her husband's on her documents. A woman must actually state that she wants to change her name.

A person can assume their spouse's name in Canada (edit: except Quebec with their screwed up rules) on stuff like DL, SIN, health card etc. without a legal name change just by showing the marriage certificate. Or she can go the actually legal name change route, which likely requires changing her American passport first. You will need to look at the provincial requirements for a legal name change.

She isn't even required to carry her Canadian ID to enter or leave Canada, so I'm not sure what you are worried about.

Not worried, just curious!

So if she enters Canada and the last names on her passport and PR card are different, there is no problem?

Provided she carries her marriage certificate to show the name change, it should not be an issue.

Hello,

I have similar question, just other way around. I am already permanent residence in Quebec. The thing is, I landed with my last name from previous marriage. Of course, all my Quebec documents have my maiden name (health card, etc), but my perminent card and passport has my name from a second marriage. Can I easily change my last name back to my maiden name? I would go to my countries embassy to change the passport to reflect my maiden name, but how do I change name on my permanent residence card?

Does it applies to Quebec residences too? I am just afraid to be stuck in legal limbo. So if I understood correctly, I change my last name to my maiden name with my government and then send copy of new passport to Canada's government to obtain a new PR card with new name? Can then I easily change all other documents as lisence, etc.?

In Alberta any 1 over the age of 18 can change last name by giving simple reason. I saw it happened. Costs U a bit but then 1 gets "Change of name certificate" which is further used to change names all over your IDs as asked :)
