It also differs by insurance company, where you live, city, town, village, province and also by your age and how long you have been driving. Once you are in Canada, you should look for an insurance broker and they will find the cheapest insurance for you. I have known someone who was paying $30 in insurance a month (good driving history) and I have known someone who was paying 300 (young guy with a brand new license).

He was a TFW and it was a few years ago, 2007 maybe. This was in Edmonton. The guy was with some type of multinational insurance company in his homeland and lucky for him they had a branch in Canada and accepted his letters of umpteen years of accident free driving. That's what he said anyway.

I don't think what you are paying would be considered a good deal in Edmonton for somebody with a good driving record. Maybe it is just cheaper in AB. Are you insured through a broker?

I don't think Ontario has such rates below 50$ a month. My friend in Nova Scotia pays about 30$ a month. In ON I don't know any one pays less than 100$

In Ontario, average insurance is about %150-$200 per month for a good driver. For someone with a lot of tickets, accidents, it can go over $300 easily.

The lowest quote I could find for us - though we are not yet in Canada, for two vehicles (2006 and 2001 models), two drivers ( 30 and 33). I do have one accident against me recently where I struck my friends car (doh!) in my driveway. But we expect to pay 250/month in London, Ontario.

Is there some sort of Canadian regulation hurdle or law that makes insurance more expensive in Canada?

I don't understand why Warren Buffet doesn't swoop in with Geico and steal all those insurers' business by offering the same product at 1/3 the price, like he does all over the US.

If I knew anything about insurance -I'd- start an auto insurance company there. Everyone in the US seems to be able to do it much cheaper than Canadian companies.

I don't know why it's so expensive, and I worked in it for 12 years in the UK!! We found an acceptable deal (not a good one!) via a local broker, but are still looking for something we'd be happy with.
Very few places accept No Claims proof from abroad which makes it tough, and being claim free for years here doesn't reduce the premiums very much either.

I may have to move to BC then! I've found 30%, but in the UK we had 70%!!
