Hello
My husband has been approved for a 2 year temporary work visa, and i will be going with him to Toronto. I was wondering if I could study with the work permit (one year program), or do i have to apply for a study visa? If so, Can i study and work if i have a work and study permit? I am just asking this because i do not know if i would have to give one up if i get the other. Can i apply for the study visa while in canada? Anyone know the processing time for a study visa?

That is all.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the main page with application processing times. Study permit inside Canada is 45 days online and 74 by paper.

If you're a full time student, you can work on campus without a separate work permit. You may also qualify for a off campus work permit after 6 months of full time schooling. Both are valid for 20 hours per week.

You could also apply for a work permit and work full time.

So sorry!!!!

The CIC website is very informative. I would recommend exploring it and reading about the different options. (I found it very interesting, but I'm also a dork!) :)

Depending on what you take, you may not need a study permit. This includes online classes or short term programs (6 months or less).

I only mention this because I took an online course and the international advisor still told me to get a study permit. It was denied, I didn't even need it, and I wasted two months and $125... grrr.

According to Regulation 215 (1) (c):

"A foreign national may apply for a study permit after entering Canada if they:

(C) hold a work permit.

So, the answer is yes, you may apply for a study permit from within Canada. You will need to apply to Vegreville. As the above poster has mentioned, you will not need a study permit if the course you want to take is 6 months or less.
