I'm a Canadian pursuing a PhD in the US. I've just gotten married to an Iranian girl who is here on a single-entrance visa (she's also a PhD student). I want to apply for her Canadian citizenship so she can get a Canadian passport and be rid of the fact that she can't exit the States so we can travel together.
We might return to Canada after our PhDs but that's not until a few years from now and I want to get her the citizenship as soon as possible (without going back to Canada). Is it possible to make your wife a Canadian without her living in Canada first? If it is, please tell me the procedure for this.
I appreciate the help in advance.

No. (as in, not a possibility at all).

The answer to your question is NO.....

You need to apply for your wife's PR first. After she gets her PR she has to LIVE in Canada for 3 years within the last 4 years of the date of application before she can apply for Citizenship...Good luck

Just to add to this, assuming that you wish to proceed with the PR application.
It's highly unlikely that she would now be granted a visa to enter Canada as a temporary resident because of the perception that she would not intend to return to her home country when it expired. Therefore, you would have to make an outland application from the USA. One of the conditions for this is that the Canadian sponsor would have to commit to returning to Canada to live alongside the PR applicant.

You are looking at a six year long citizenship project here, assuming that everything goes smoothly, which it mostly doesn't. Almost all of this period will require you both to be on Canadian soil. Maybe you should consider an alternative plan for the future?
