Agreed, if you look at Government jobs in Ottawa, most require some level of bilingualism.
I'm a physician applying for a federal job right now.

They don't seem to care that I am bilingual. I am interviewing in Ottawa at the end of the month and can interview in either official language they tell me.

Good and bad are everywhere, but it all depends on what priorities a person might have to live in either UK or Canada. Fo education, travel, shopping, food, social life,I think Europe is much more advance.while Canada is a peaceful place to live.

I love England, I spent 45 years in the Midlands and never, ever thought about moving until I met the love of my life...curse him. Of course he had to be Canadian.

So I now live in Vancouver and having spent 4 years here I love Canada too. Home is where your heart is and my heart is with my man.

I am doomed and I hate tea tooooooo....

Hello,
Thank you everyone for sharing their experiences. It is nice and it motivates all of us who are new to the country. This is not about slagging any country, but our personal perceptions/experiences. If you read my previous posts here, you will realise that my experience in the UK has been rather negative, although it had positives too. I also know people who love their lives in London and they thought I was crazy to want to move to Canada (to be fair, these people have never been to Canada and they think all of Canada is like Greenland). They are all shocked when I tell them that latitude-wise, Monaco and Nice in Southern France fall slightly North of Toronto; they previously thought that Toronto was closer to Stockholm or Helsinki. It is all about information and experiences.

I apologise if I offended any British person when sharing my experience in London, I know I would not want anybody telling me that my country (Spain) treated them badly or that they did not like it, and many do anyway, but I accept that there are many wrong things about Spain (lots of them).

All I can say is that I am looking forward to be part of Canada with other people from all over the world and make this young country even better, there is still a lot to do to make it even greater. I am already proud to be Canadian.

I was from the midlands to, fell in love with a Canadian, and yes its true home is where the love of your life is, and he spent 10 years with me in the UK, but he wanted to go home and now live in Canada :)

I grew up in an English home in Canada. I moved to the Midlands for 3 years to see where my mother's family came from and loved it. England is truly where I am most at home.

But I am heading back to Canada as my US partner thought England was a little to far away. So I will have to suffer having to live in Nelson, BC. :)

Hello,

I have lived in the United Kingdom since 1999, even though I was lucky enough to live in NYC for three years in between. I am now a Canadian PR and I can give you some pointers about the UK as I cannot wait to get out of here in just a few months when my work projects are done and I can trasnfer there. In one line: 'I do not even want to transfer through the UK anymore'... but I will be fair and tell you what I think is positive and what I think is negative:

Negative:
- The level of violence has been getting so much worse. I cannot even go out at night in London without the thought that there is a possibility that I am going to be stabbed by a 16-year old.
- British people are always unhappy, there is no happiness in the streets. Everyone seems moody and grumpy, unless they are drunk and totally fake. Unfortunately, this is very contagious and I feel like my personality has become very grey since I moved here.
- A very important thing, is that unless you are British, you will never be able to call this land your home. They will never see you as one of them, and the levels of integration are awful. I felt like nobody could claim being American or Canadian because they are new countries. If you do not look English or speak like them, then they will never consider you one of them, which makes it very difficult for me to be proud about this country.
- In England, you need to queue for everything, and everywhere is crowded, not just a little crowded but very crowded, even jails. Yesterday, it took me 2 hours to do 30 miles in the city; I could have chosen to travel by Underground, but most lines were delayed or down due to signal failures, which leads me to the next point...
- The UK is not a modern country (even though they think that everything outside of Britain is Third World). I always love to go to Spain because we have evolved and become modern, we do not rely on Victorian faucets, rails, houses, pipelines... the public transportation moves as fast as my apartment, but at least my apartment is not crowded.
- Weather weather weather. I am not going to live in Calgary because I need to be in Ontario close to my in-law family in NY state, but I will take a freezing sunny day over the endless days of cloudiness in the UK. I call it the land of the eternal summer, there is barely a difference in weather between January and July (unless we are having a freaky year). Like the English say, this year Summer fell on a Thursday. It is very very sad. I need seasons: Cold and snow in Winter and Heat and sun in the Summer.
-Cost of living is outrageous. You will need to settle for things you do not even like such as the home you buy or the apartment you rent.
- There are many more but it could get personal so I think I will stop here and move onto the positives.

Positive:
- Travelling is cheap and easy because London is a major hub (so it is easy to escape). We have travelled all over Europe and North Africa and you can do that during a long weekend if you want.
- Employment law here is great! you are very protected and you get a lot more than you do in Canada in terms of holidays, maternity, getting laid off, notices and so on. That is the thing that I will definitely miss from Europe in general I think. The recruitment process is easy and employers are aware of international papers and work experience.
- If you do not like the cold or the heat, then come here
- The NHS is much better than people say, althogh I hear it depends on your council, but I have not had to wait very much for anything and my doctors are mostly available.

If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

just 1 conflict here i dont agree that the NHS is best i think free medical is the same everywhere I had a real bad experience with them when my daughter was seriously ill and i was waiting for my turn in emergency too and finally after checkup i wasnt able to get a bed for her not only me but 6 or 7 other parents were waiting too all with little children, emergency section and the main hospital of Leeds..

I totaly agree, I spent 10 hours in emergency one night with chest pains and they then turned of the heart monitor because the alarm kept going off, also they missed several clues that including an xray that showed I had an enlarged heart, and ended up because they did nothing about it with heart failure, luckly after 5 years of fighting my way to get better, my heart has now full function and is normal size.

yes, as I said, the NHS depends on personal experience and maybe area.
However, from my own experience, I have never had problems. Whenever I need to see my doctor, I just need to call early in the morning and I get an appointment for that same day or the following day 99% of the times. My partner did not have to wait at all for a muscle operation and they did take good care of us, and my sister is extremely happy with the treatment she is getting during her pregnancy.
I am aware of many horrible stories also, so it is not great, but I am just saying that it is not as horrifying as people say it is. It could be a lot worse.
Having said that, they need ways to go to catch up with Spain and France in terms of socialised care, especially when it comes to elderly care.
