We dont have to avoid Desi ppl. I mean only those desis who rushed to mortgage plans within a few years of arrival and not having enough income. And also avoid desi business owners as they only exploit. Other than that all the help u will get will be from Desis.
I have made a strict rule for myself and I recommend it to others as well.
NEVER GO FOR A MORTGAGE PLAN UNTIL YOUR 40H/WEEK INCOME IS 3 TIMES THE MORTGAGE.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wealth of knowledge Salman bhai. It has been two months since I landed in Toronto so I can imagine full well how useful this thread will be for all new comers. Moving to Canada as an immigrant is a big deal and requires a lot of pre planning. And to plan effectively, one must understand what to expect in first few months in Canada. That's where information you shared will be highly beneficial for the new birds. And I can not over emphasis the fact of trying to avoid desi people, unless one needs a dose of discouragement and de motivation.
Hats off to you mate. +1

5 years ago one in 10 workers were employed by agencies. Now one in each 5 is a temp. I mean at least they have to follow the employment standard act for temps. They can strip one off his/her healthcare benefits, they can fire temp at any time but the wage exploitation by the agencies is not acceptable for me. There shold be Equal wage for equal work.

8Hannah8 said:
I would not be so harsh on employment agencies. Many big corporations reserve spaces for external conrtactors (temp-workers). Maybe my experience would not be relevant to your post, but I would still share it:
as a fresh grad I was recruited by employment agency and my salary for financial district was really minimal. I was on a contract for a year and a half, being really ripped off (what could I do, many companies hesitate offer full-time permanent jobs to foreingers). However, my managers really liked me and transitioned my position to permanent. Contract positions through agencies are generally good for getting to know a field from inside and networking. Plus, it also gives much desired "Canadian experience".
Considering "empty postings" for jobs. Those are usually the internal hires as employer is required to go through a process of posting a postion opening. Otherwise, I fail to understand why an employer would advertise for jobs that never existed.

I am not an IT guy actually but I know a few guys here who are earning good money by data center and project management for IBM. IT field offers a lot of international certifications. I recommend you do a job search survey on indeed.ca that what kind of IT professionals are required and high demand and do those certifications. I am a PLC programmer and sometimes I have to take data from Machine control interface to a web database. Thats why I am looking for A+ and CCNA to add to my resume.

Dr. Fee is covered under OHIP. Your family doctor makes good money by just calling u again and again. OK your blood test reports are here just come with ur card and we will tell u. When u go there he will say everything is ok sir. Visits means money. My daughter was on anti allergic medication from Pakistan. A specialist doctor and member of American association of Alerrgy and Asthyma from Pakistan gave a list of medication which was working well. When it finished we went to our family doc. She didn't even looked at the prescription and said it's wrong. Your daughter dont need any medicine. After two weeks of stopping medication she developed same symptoms. When we went to the doctor she said ohh dont worry its common flu. Biased diagnosis and poor observation. Not listening to patients. Just money making visits. Fortunately someone in the neighborhood was coming and we requested them to bring one year of prescription from Pakistan. I went to her again and she told me that if u r not satisfied I can write antibiotics.
I am not a medical doctor but at least I got her point. She s not gonna listen to me or my wife who is a pharmacist and if we insist on giving anti allergic medication she is gonna write costly antibiotics. next time NO TO CANADIAN DOCTORS.

Canadian patients wait longest to see family doctors
Access to after-hours care, emergency department waits vary between provinces, raise questions

Long wait for doctors in Canada 3:11
0 shares 1043 comments
Canada ranks last among 11 OECD countries in a new survey in terms of how quickly people can get in to see their regular family physicians, showing "where a person lives does matter," says the Health Council of Canada.

The finding was published in the council's final bulletin, based on data from the 2013 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of the General Public.

The council, an independent national agency, has been reporting on health-care renewal since its creation in 2003.

The report, titled "Where You Live Matters: Canadian views on health care quality," focuses on differences across the provinces, comparisons among the 11 OECD countries that took part in the survey between March and June 2013, and changes in Canada’s performance over the past decade.

Hypochondriacs, not wait times ruining Canadian health care, say many CBCNews.ca readers
"What we find is that Canada is really not keeping pace with a lot of these other countries," Mark Dobrow, the group's director of analysis and reporting, said in an interview.

"The highest performing province might be looking pretty good in Canada, but be the worst performing if you compared it to all the other countries in the survey."

Hospital Wait Times
More than a third of Canadians in a new report said their regular doctor did not seem informed about care they had received in the emergency department, a finding that has not improved since 2004. (Paul Chiasson/Canadian Press)
For example, 50 per cent of respondents in Ontario said that on the whole, the health-care system works pretty well, compared with 23 per cent in Quebec.

The report notes that improvement in reducing wait times has been modest and is often lacking, and concerns Canadians. Only 31 to 46 per cent of Canadians, depending on the province, could get an appointment the same day or the next day, not including emergency department visits.

Since patients who don't have a primary care provider go to the emergency department, the two waits are related, Dobrow said.

Brantford, Ont., resident Richard Kinsella said he had trouble finding a family doctor when he moved to the city east of Hamilton 15 months ago. Kinsella said people in Brantford commonly turn to the emergency department.

"The emergency, I've been twice, and I was there waiting over six hours."

Dr. Nandini Sathi
Family physician Dr. Nandini Sathi's practice is now able to see more patients within 48 hours of when they call. (CBC)
People in the U.S. have quicker access to their family doctors, with 48 per cent of those polled saying they could get a same-day or next-day appointment, ranking second last among the 11 countries.

Germany was listed as first in how quickly residents saw their doctors, at 76 per cent, followed by New Zealand at 72 per cent.

Many Canadians don't have a regular doctor

Dobrow said the report raises important questions about the wide variations among provinces in areas such as access to after-hours care, emergency department wait times, affordability of care, co-ordination among care providers, and uptake of screening programs.

"Do we have the rights goals for our system? Are we looking at better health, better care, better value for all Canadians?" he said.

In September, the council suggested that provinces pay attention to issues such as leadership, having the right types of policies, and legislation and capacity building. For example, overall resources in primary care could be increased by expanding scopes of practice of some health professionals and improving their interdisciplinary training.

At Toronto's Wellpoint Clinic, the physicians changed to an "open access" system, meaning patients no longer make appointments weeks in advance. Exceptions include people who need to prebook wheelchair transit services or a physical checkup.

"As physicians, we were worried that we would become inundated with patients on a daily basis," said family physician Dr. Nandini Sathi. "In fact, what's happened it's opened up a little bit more time throughout the day for patients who need to be seen."

Previously, a non-urgent patient may have had to wait up to 10 days or sometimes longer if a doctor was on vacation. "Now it really is 48 hours," Sathi said. More urgent care slots are also available.

The other findings in the report include:

Between three per cent and 15 per cent of Canadians, depending on the province, do not have a regular doctor or clinic.
Accessing medical care after hours without resorting to emergency care is difficult for 62 per cent of Canadians, ranging from 56 per cent in B.C. to 76 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador. In contrast, the U.K. cut its problem in half over the same time period.
61 per cent of Canadians rate their health as very good or excellent.
36 per cent of Canadians take two or more prescription drugs, among the highest use of prescription drugs of the 11 countries surveyed.
21 per cent of Canadians skipped dental care in the past year due to cost.
37 per cent of Canadians said their regular doctor did not seem informed about care they had received in the emergency department, a finding that has not improved since 2004.
20 per cent of Canadians hospitalized overnight left without written instructions about what they should do and what symptoms to watch for at home.
Between 23 per cent and 49 per cent of Canadians age 50 or older have never had a test to screen for bowel or colon cancer.

This is an absolutely brilliant post!! JazakAllah for this... bookmarked for future reference...
I have a few more questions.. they are general questions which should hopefully benefit everyone, though I have just provided personal examples to make it clear...

1- For someone who has no training in IT/programming, etc etc... what are the certifications you would suggest? (My spouse is currently aeronautical maintenance and technician... and we know there is very less chance of getting that there... ) I have studied a completely different field (International organizations, NGOs and charity work etc) but we know we need to start from scratch... Main point: so any particular certifications you can suggest where we have no background, but it can help us find a job in the country?

2 - I was planning on not getting a car either... it seems like a major expense! We have cousins in Toronto, who have a family and car ofcourse, but since its just 2 of us, and we are hoping to stay within Toronto area close to public transport, we were hoping that we can manage without a car for a while atleast... and try to save.. is that really such a major factor? How are taxi fares there if required?

3- The breakdown you provided - I really appreciate that!! It's a personal document, and I thank you for sharing something of this nature, as it really provides a very crucial account of daily expenses.. The minimum settlement funds that they mention.. Just below CAD 15,000/- for 2 people.. will that be enough? How long will it last would you think? Assuming decent expenses, and a comfortable life.. including takeouts, Tim Hortons, etc couple of times a week...

4 - We were planning that 1 of us remains here with a stable job in UAE, while the other goes to Canada to try it out for a few months and try to settle in... and then the spouse will join a bit later... would that make sense? Is it realistic to survive with 1 person's salary?

5 - You had mentioned something about opening a borderless account... are you saying that we should only convert the required amount into CAD and then keep the rest as UAE dirham or USD and convert it later once the value falls even lower, maybe 1 year from now? Currently I think CAD is sort of an all time low..

6 - For someone who comes in as a new immigrant, is it easy to get call center jobs? What are the hours and payment like? While searching for another job...

7 - Is there ANYTHING that we can do from outside Canada.... an online certification courses that can be done from abroad? or anything else that will help increase chances for a stable income?

Thankyou soo much!!

I hope the answers for the above will be helpful for everyone who reads this.. on a general level..

Thanks for appreciation brother. These are the questions being asked by lot of ppl on the forum. My analysis might be wrong but I have done a lot of research here.
1- For someone with no IT experience and want to enter this field I would recommend A+ certification. But remember that with this one and no previous experience in IT u might not be able to get beyond a certain point. I mean $20/h mark. There is a huge influx of IT professionals from india and these are really competent guys who have proved themselves sitting in india and have good relationship and job offers from here.
Aeronautical engineering is also here but maintenance tasks almost everywhere is done by mill right trade person. PE exam is so difficult that it is designed to fail u. They can ask anything from Brenaulli equation to material properties. For u I recommend a property management certificate. Its easy and u can make good money.
2- I dont know where u r planning to shift and transit situation there but I feel like handicapped without my car. If u have a plan something like this come march ir april. Winter without a car Ahhhhhh.
3- 15k is enough but u will not b having time. Start something immediately after arrival.
4- I asked the same question to IOM presenter and she came up with a very valid answer. Thanks god we came together. Once u have decided to come here forget Dubai. Its gonna b a difficult and lonely life, so dry that u will be depressed living alone. My recommendation dont do that. U will never succeed.
5- CAD is related to oil prices. My speculation is its gonna fall down and down. Once peace deal with Iran is signed and their oil will start coming in oil is gonna dive deep with CAD. So dont take a risk. Just follow a currency trend of past 1 year.
6- Call center offer a lot of entry level positions. Just send them ur IELTS scorecard with resume and u will definitely get 12/h job. Good thing is once u will be trained they might ask u to work from home to save their office space.
7- A+ certification, microsoft office certified professional CCNA only if u plan to enter IT. Other than that nothing. D

Dear Brother Salman Ahmed,

First of all I would say to you that :-
جزاكم الله خيرا الجزاء في الدنيا والآخرة
For sharing with honesty and sincerity these useful information with your real and truthful experiences.

You can find hundreds of "Desi Advisers" in our "Desديس as well as Par-Desپرديس, but really to get an adviser, who will guide you instead of misguide you, who will tell you the truth instead of lies and bluffing, and who will advise you instead of destroy you with his ill intent, it is really hard to find such guys specially in "Desi Ethnicity" (Of course I am talking here about majority, not those who are honest, truthful and sincere, P.S here there is no intention to harm anyone).

Please keep it up and whatever useful tips and tricks that you have accumulated, please share it with the intent of صدقه جاريه

I am sure whoever will benefit from these useful tips, tricks and guidelines, I am pretty sure you will get in return reward for it from الله عزوجل

Once again thank you very much and God Bless you and please keep updating us with your new experiences and Real Time Information that you are getting there.

WHAT ARE WE
Whatever we do and where ever we go we are Desi. We are proud of being desi and we should be. One of my friend is living in Thorncliffe Park Drive area and I regularly go there to enjoy Desi culture. If u r looking for a pure Paki atmosphere and lot and lot of relationships and tired of living alone I recommend immediately shift to Thorncliffe Park drive. The area is just like Mini Pakistan and everything available within walking range. Only thing to care about finding a good trouble free, cockroach free and leakage free apartment. Rents are very affordable I mean u will never find something like one bedroom in 900 including all amenities. There is a mosque in each apartment building and Ramadan, Taravih is just a few steps down. Unfortunately I got a job far from there otherwise that would have been an ideal place to live. Only problem is that so called Desi goras dont like that place. Sara Pakistani katchra bhara hay wahan. Bachay kharab ho jaen gay, schooling theek nahi and building apartments mein problems hay aur Management sunti nahi.

What are we? Pakistani katchra. We like to talk behind our feiends and family, we are more interested in whats going on in the neighborhood and we impose our thinking on children and verbally abuse them and threaten them rather than talking them out with logical reasoning and leadership skills. On the other hand we have the best intact family structure in Canada. Our kids dont have to do odd jobs for university study expenses and we have occupied some of the highest positions in corporate sector. Without a steady influx of Pakis and Indians I mean Desis Canada would have been a different place.
So except for problematic apartments everything there is perfect. I found obedient and bilingual kids there and most important is some elderly guys are available to teach religion and Quran after school. Instead here in Milton most of the Desi family kids are unaware of Urdu. They dont even understand it.
So VERY IMPORTANT.
Never concentrate on teaching English to your child if u plan to come here. A child learns 80 times faster from his/her age fellows than from u. So within 2 months of landing your 6 year old will be speaking English like a native speaker and u will be at a little bit higher level than Meera. Apologies OFF COURSE. Only thing he/she will forget is Urdu. its not just a language he/she will forget but the emotional attachment as well. I got 7.5 in IELTS but still I will not be like a native speaker and I cant express my emotions neither feel the ones for my daughter. Shes just 2 years old and we are concentrating on her Urdu skills.
My Punjabi, Arabic and Urdu have helped me more than my English here. Being multilingual is a big blessing here and dont take that from your children. These are not my words but teachers and settlement workers tell parents not to answer a child and pretend that u didnt understand him/her if he/she talks English at home. Bilingual kids are always more intelligent.
So once again in my observation, Kids in Thorncliffe area had better understanding of Urdu than here in Milton. So be an immigrant be a Canadian citizen but don't lose ur identity. For me Milton is just like Multan and Oakville is chak number 472 rb Oakanwala. Rootsville is Jaranwala and kings sreet is shahkot road
