Hi guys .. So I have a question. If I get Canadian PR (which I currently don't have), but I remain in the US for 4+ years and only spend the last 6 months or so in Canada, can I still renew my Canadian PR, or apply for it again without any prejudice ? Will it be honored or will they be reluctant to give me PR again ?

Also, same question as above but now you're out of Canada for the whole 5 years. You only go to Canada once to collect the PR card and then return to the US the next day, and that's it.

You need to stay 2 out of 5 years in Canada to retain your PR status.

Yes, but my question is regarding what to do if you DON'T meet that requirement.

If you could enter Canada then stay 2 years and renew your PR card. Otherwise you have reapply PR as per present procedure express entry.

But even if I re-enter Canada, the second those 5 years are up, won't I go out of status because within those last 5 years, I won't have stayed for at least 2 years in Canada ? Won't this get me into trouble legally ?

No I don't think you understood my question. Suppose I get my PR, but stay in the US for the first 4 years. After that, I enter Canada, at which point my PR card is still valid (as 5 years haven't gone by yet since I was issued the PR card). After spending a year in Canada, it would have been 5 years since I was issued my PR card, however in those 5 years I have only spent 1 year in Canada, which means that I have not met the requirements for maintaining my PR. So at that stage, even though I would be in Canada, won't I be out of status, and will be staying in Canada illegally, as my PR's conditions have been violated ?

No you won't be out of status. Losing PR status is more complex than that. Your only worry is when you come back after 4 years and in the case they question your residency at port of entry, you may be reported for failing requirements, at which point you will still get in and will be advised on how to proceed to possibly maintain your status.

PR does not expire. Your PR card does.

As you are in Canada, remain there until you meet the 730 days, then apply for renewal of your card.
