I wrote a post below about me sponsoring my husband to Canada from the US. I am living in the US with him and our children and have not worked for almost 6 years, being a stay at home mom while he is the sole provider for the family. We plan to live with my parents in Canada if he gets approved to be permanent resident and we will both look for jobs then. My parents are doing financially well but both are retired and receive pension. Other than that, they don't receive any government assistance and will write a letter stating they will be financially responsible for us while we are in Canada until we are able to be on our own. Will it matter that they are retired?

Also if anyone knows...do I include my kids under dependents? they are born in the US and they also have Canadian citizenships after I applied for proof of citizenship for them. One of my kids doesn't have the proof yet as he is not due to be born until a few weeks from now. I will apply for his proof of Canadian citizenship after he is born. Thanks!! This forum has been a life saver for me!

No, it won't matter they are retired. The idea is to show that adequate arrangements are in place for your needs that do not involve reliance on social assistance. Statements from your parents to the effect that they are aware of and supportive of your plans to move to Canada will contribute to establishing that you have such plans in place.

Only non-citizen or PR children would be included as your husband's dependents, so you don't need to include your children who would already have citizenship through you. They would be included as family members on the IMM 5406.

Thank you sooo much for your reply!! My baby that will be due in a few weeks...should I include him under the dependents since he won't have a citizenship card from Canada when I mail out the application? I will apply for his proof of canadian citizenship but i won't receive it by the time i send the application...thanks!!!

No, don't include him because you will not need to sponsor him. You will pass on your citizenship, as for the other children, so he does not need to be included.

Thank you again Charlie!! Does my parents need to show their tax forms from last year or anything like that? like do they need to show they own the house, etc? or any type of financial statements? or just a statement from them saying they will be financially responsible for us until we can be on our own should be sufficient? thanks!!
