So my question is what kind of visa would an international student need to work during the apprenticeship program i.e accrue the hours needed each year when given the blue book. I got the below from trade secret Alberta:

The term of apprenticeship for an electrician is 4 years (four 12-month periods) including a minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job training and 8 weeks of technical training in each of the first three years, and a minimum of 1350 hours of on-the-job training and 12 weeks of technical training in the fourth year.

i.e You work full time (40hrs/week i.e 10 months) in the field and go to college for 2 months each year for 3 years. Then work 9 months in the 4th year and 3 months in classroom.

And realistically, most people would not get the required 1500hrs for each year. I know someone (a Canadian) in the instrumentation trade at my current place of work, It took him 2 years to accrue 1500hrs due to swings in the job market. So it could potentially taky him more than 5years to get his journeyman ticket. What impact would that also have on someone on a temporary visa, if any exist at all for apprenticeship program ???

I also believe most employers of apprentice usually require their staff to work for 6 months to 1 year of labour jobs before offering them apprenticeship

Thanks for your replies.

You would need a work permit to take on an apprenticeship. Before you can get the work permit, your employer would need to obtain an approved LMIA.
