I landed as a PR yesterday (an immigrant from the USA) and the agent said I need no work permit. Do I need a social insurance number to work?

There is a 9-digit number hand-written in my passport - perhaps this is my soc. insurance no. until I get my card?

Than

You have to go to one of the Service Canada's nearby you with your passport and COPR where they will issue you a SIN number.

You can work with the SIN number received from Service Canada only.

Just go to Service Canada office and they will issue you Social Insurance number on the spot and you can start working right after that. Issuing SIN card used to be 3 weeks process but now they issue on the paper on the spot.
