Can I resign and stay in Canada legally until PR is granted?

Hi there

I started working for my employer just over one year ago - they acquired the LMO etc. My Work Permit is for two years and expires in April 2011. The Work Permit states that I can only work with that company, in that location etc etc I understand I am eligible to apply for PR as a FSW, based on 1 year's experience, however I also understand that that will take 6-8 months. I want to know what will happen if I leave my job, or if I am fired, before PR is granted. It says on the website that the work permit must be valid when PR is granted. Does that mean I actually have to be working with the company at that time? Or does it mean that I can stay here legally until April 2011 even if I leave the job, by which time hopefully I will have been grated PR?

Basically, I would have resigned many times over - I just don't know where that leaves me.

Thanks for your help in advance
