Hi Guys,

I am responsible to support my sponsored ex-wife till March next year.

Is there any means for me to get information if she is in Canada and if she is working or lives off social assistance?

I don’t need to know where she is exactly and what does she do. All I need to know if she is working or will I get a bill from government to pay for her welfare, so that I can plan for it financially.

Please let me know if I can acquire about this information and what’s the correct way to do it.

Thank you,

irafikov

You could try asking the appropriate welfare office(s) if there are any outstanding social assistance debts. You won't be able to find out if someone is in Canada or not.

In Ontario for example, you can contact the Ministry of Community and Social Services Overpayment Recovery Unit. They are responsible for taking payments on overdue cases. Usually people call them after IRCC notifies them of outstanding debt years later, when they're trying to sponsor a new person. But you can explain to them your situation and that you just want to check.

Keep in mind your ex-wife might have a different first name or last name now, not sure how that will affect finding the records.

I don't think you'll be able to get access to any information about her due to Privacy laws. The most you'll be able to do is ask whether there is any social insurance debt / repayment against your name.

IMO they won't give him information about his wife. This would be a violation of privacy laws. The most he can do is inquiry if there's anything outstanding against his name.

Thank you for your answers Guys. I live in Ontario. Do I need to call Ministry of Community and Social Services Overpayment Recovery Unit then?

Please let me know.

Yes but there are likely delays in determining funds need to be recovered so you may not get an accurate answer.
