congratulations on your COPR!!!

it is a miracle you got a visa 40 days!!! after file transferred to VO. Mexico says 13 months in the CIC page!!!!

you are too lucky
Thanks. This was our second application, we had to let the first one expire, so it was fast but feels like this started in Jan 2010 when we first filed. Mexico can be longer because of certain complications. And we didn't have to get Mexican police clearance which you can't do until the VO requests it.

Hmmmm....he can apply for OHIP with the CoPR (no need for PR card). However, he will need proof of address (e.g., mailed bank statement). Just go to Service Ontario with the registration form and required forms.

The three months are calculated off of the arrival date so if it takes you a few days to get the evidence together it won't affect the 3 month wait period. You're good to go.

Yep. We don't get mailed bank statements, haha. Since it won't take effect until 90 days after landing, and I won't be getting my PR card until more than halfway through that (or so, it fluctuates to about 50 business days), I figure I'll just wait until the PR card is in hand anyways.

You'll still need proof of address so you may want to switch to having bank statements mailed for one month ;) They can be quite picky...

I have a lease agreement with his name on it - that will work for OHIP?

Good to know about the 3 month wait thanks.

So basically he can do everything right away except apply for work until he has a SIN?

1. Yes - lease agreement with his name on it + CoPR + passport will do it :) Take a print-out of this with you, just in case.

2. He'll even get the SIN number immediately when he applies. You can do it all - OHIP, SIN, bank account - in one morning if you want to :)

Well I am the type that would want to do it all in one morning. DH not so much, lol.

I bookmarked that link, very useful!

Cool! Just beware ... we were told that 'policy' means that they have to be issued *after* the date you left your prior address and established residence in ON (makes no sense to me but alas, I don't make the rules). One Service Ontario Office even claimed they had to be issued after your last trip out of Ontario. So if you went, settled in, got your DL and then left ON for a day consider getting the bank statement as backup too ;)

You can't switch driver's license over at service Canada.... I am in Ontario on a visitor's record and since I am here past the 60 days I switched mine and it had to be done @ the road test place (because it's an out of country license).... it only took 25 mins for the whole process including wait times, I had to turn in my Pennsylvania License, show my passport and I had a letter that had been mailed to my address here as proof of my address you will only get credit for driving as is left on the license itself ie my license was 5 years and there was only 8 months left before it expired so I got credit for 4 years 4 months which was enough to get a full license, I am now waiting for my complete drivers record for insurance purposes. GL!

Once you get your full record, it may be worth asking Drive Test to update your DL to reflect your full experience ;) They may no longer be willing to do it, but my understanding is that they can since you exchanged it upfront.

Ontario car insurance is a pain to get and expensive! I can't even believe it. Like 3x more than what we are used to. And we are having to get drivers records from all states we have lived in and insurance records from ALL the car insurance companies we have used. Biggest pain of the whole moving process.

Thanks for that bit of info maybe worth asking them to do! they do ask the date you first got your license and I put that in not hard to forget your 18th birthday even tho it was so so long ago LOL I'm not even looking forward to that part canadiangirl78. He hasn't added me yet I'm here but he works all day so I really don't drive and don't have a car of my own yet but I'm sure it will be thru the roof everything up here is.... but they no we will pay it cus we hafta have it!
