Hello,

My IEC Visa expires early November. I have applied for CEC and also BOWP, current awaiting R10 on my CEC so the bridging Visa can be processed. Likely the bridging Visa won't be approved til December earliest based on waiting times mentioned on these forums.

I was always under the impression that I could work still on implied status with my expired SIN until I get the bridging Visa at least and et a new SIN. However have read recently that this might not be the case and therefore I might be screwed.

Can anybody confirm any of this so I don't have a mental breakdown (or maybe do depending on the answer!)

Thanks in advance!

The opinion expressed on Canada Visa and British Expats forums is that you are not on implied status to work after your IEC visa expires until the BOWP is issued. However, I had assurances from 3 officers on the IRCC helpline that I was OK to work. I got their numbers and made a record of the time/date of the conversations. They also told me a record of the advice given is made for future reference. Did not need it in the end because my BOWP came through. I am still uncertain because senior posters on both forums are definite in their opinion. If you do call IRCC make sure you have some spare time because the wait for a human can be long! It looks like you are aware of the expired SIN issue which will be flagged by Service Canada to any existing/prospective employer.

What's the number for the IRCC helpline? I just get an automated response from the number I call and can't seem to get through to an agent at all, ever.

This all seems to be a huge grey area. A BOWP seems to generally be considered a renewal of an open work permit, and therefore I can work on implied status, this also makes the most logical sense to me... I've had one immigration consultant tell me this also, however i've also had one immigration consultant tell me that technically i'm not eligible to work, but "most people don't know this, and work anyway, and its fine"... So once again, super conflicting information...

I don't know why they cannot write a bloody rule for this. Surely this happens more often than not.

Hope this helps.
Call the IRCC Call Centre (1-888-242-2100), from within Canada only, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm local time, except for statutory holidays). To speak to an agent, navigate through the automated messages by pressing 3-4-1-0. Prepare to wait on hold for some time. Try calling early in the morning or use a speakerphone.
