I am in Toronto now as a student. How difficult it is to find a job now that I am here? Can I change my status with CIC from student to work permit? How difficult/easy is the following:

1. Finding a job when I am still on a student visa?
2. Changing my status to a work permit?

Please say positive things! Thanks

Assume it will be extremely difficult.

To change from a student permit to a work permit, you will first have to find an employer who is willing to give you a full time job. That employer will then have to advertise the job to prove that no Canadian could be found for the job. (If a Canadian can be found, then the employer must hire the Canadian - not you.) Once the employer has advertised the job to prove no Canadian can be found, the employer must then apply for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO). If the LMO is approved (not all are), you can then apply for a work permit.

It costs money and takes several months for an LMO to be processed. For this reason (and because there's no guarantee the LMO will be approved) many employers are not interested in hiring foreign workers.

To be approved for a work permit, you will have to prove that you have strong ties to your home country and have no plans on remaining in Canada long term. If you came here on a student visa and are then changing to a work permit, CIC may believe that you are just looking for a way of staying in Canada and it's possible it may be difficult to get a work permit approved.

Thats only for a closed work permit. If you graduate and then apply for a work permit you will get a open one where you can work for any employer.. Much easier way

Agreed. But OP just arrived and is looking to change her study permit to a work permit. So she's not asking about finishing her course and then working. She's asking about stopping her studies and working instead.

It doesn't cost the employer a dime (more than time spent filling the forms and time is essentially money) to apply for LMO. The employee must pay VO for the WP though.

Also, keep in mind that you were given a permit to come here to study. The likelihood of you being able to get a WP is pretty much nil. CIC will probably tell you to either keep studying or go home.

I'm in a 3 year program in college. No need for university to get a 3 year PGWP.

I guess u misunderstood me.

I said 'For 3 Year pgwp u need a course of 2 year' no where i said 2 year course from a University.

I said try for a University as it gives better career prospects.

That's not necessarily true.

Thats a debatable thought. :)

That's the same thing as saying "that's not necessarily true".

It depends on profession to start, educational institution and it's reputation within the community of your profession. Figure that out first and chose accordingly.
