Can I buy car in BC when I'm visitor status? 10 years+ driving experience in HK

Hi everyone,

Can I buy my own car and get insurance in BC while I'm on visitor status? I'm from Hong Kong and waiting for my PR to approved in BC right now. Me and my financee just moved back to Canada and I am here with my visa free 6 months status as a visitor, my fiancee just got a car and have insurance for all family member who has a driving license for more than 10 years. I have my Hong Kong driving license for more than 10 year and now i'm using my international driving license. I'm wanting to buy my own car and will need to get the driving test done after 6 months living in BC. My Hong Kong driving license cannot switch to a BC license so my question is

1. Can I buy a car now with visitor status?
2. Can I get insurance if i'm driving my fiancee's car?
3. Do I have to get a learner license and need people to be with when I'm going to do the driving test?
4. Do I need to put my new driving sticker on my car and for how long?
5. After I get my new driver license in BC, am I equal to a new driver in Canada even I have over 10 years driving experience?


It will be a pain in the ass if everything need to start all over again.

You just have to look closely.lol.
1.Yes you can. (BC has a certain limit on how long you can use your international license, I'm assuming you have one.)
2.Your fiance will have to call her insurance and add you to her insurance as driver of her car. (This is what my hubby did.)
3,4,5: You will have to get you 10 year driving experience assessed at the registry, They are the only one who can tell you if the experience you have is acceptable, and advice you whether you have to go through the GDL, or just get the advanced road test.
