Can I buy and register a vehicle with Class 7 licence in Alberta?

I have been living in Canada with my husband, Canadian citizen, since Sep 2015. In May 2017 I have applied for PR under Spouse Sponsorship program and included OWP application in a package. Thus any time soon, from one to four month, I receive my Work Permit and would be able to exchange my current licence, I bought from my country of origin, through GDL exemption programs for the Alberta DL.

As per Alberta rules, first I have to pass Class 7 Learner’s test, i.e. obtain Class 7 licence, and then, if they have recognized my previous driver experience as applicable to canadian, I challenge advanced road test to obtain full Class 5 driver’s licence.

So, my question is, once I have obtained Class 7 licence can I purchase and register a vehicle on my name? So I would have something to drive around to brush up my driving skills before I challenge advanced road test.

Or I must buy it jointly with my husband so he could place his insurance on it and register on both our names? Or how it works in this case?

I have my own funds to buy a car but I’d like to have my name on it in case smth happens.

There is nothing to stop you from purchasing a vehicle in your own name in Alberta, as long as you are over 18 or have the consent of a parent if you aren't. Insurance (and as a result, registration) would probably be difficult. It's unlikely an insurance company would insure an unlicensed driver, making it impossible to get registration.
Do you have an International drivers permit now? Until you receive your PR, you can actually drive in Alberta with your current license and the IDP. You won't have to change it until you become a PR. When you do change it, you might have to wait a couple of weeks before you hear about the license equivalency. If you opt for Class 5 GDL, the test is pretty easy. If you want a full Class 5 (and this depends on if the investigation department confirms your experience) you can challenge that test. Either way, you would only have a class 7 for a few weeks.

What's a point to buy a vehicle and not be able to insure & register it? (rhetorical question)

My question was, can BUY and REGISTER it having Class 7 Learner's Driver's Licence. And if NOT then what options do I have?

And my answer was you can buy in your name but possibly not insure you without a license, which means no registration. if you can't get insurance, you can't register it. Best to call an insurance company and ask them first. You certainly can't drive it around without a licensed driver in the vehicle with a class 7.
